The “Economic Analyst” Jokes of the Year

January 21st, 2009

1. The only available jobs are at the Unemployment Office.

2. In order to save France struggling economy, Nicolas Sarkozy decided to sell half of Carla Bruni’s cloths.

3. Barrack Obama is forced to take a second job to support his family.

(to be continued next year or when new jokes become available)

Barrack H. Obama (44th)

January 20th, 2009

The world is in crysis. The markets go down and America celebrates. They have a new president (#44).

Good luck, Mr. Obama! You are going to need it! ;)

France Helps Auto Industry

January 20th, 2009

It looks like the France government will help the troubled auto industry by giving Renault, Citroen and Peugeot a total of five or six billion euro.

So, the companies will have a little more money, but I do not think the real problem will be solved. When there are no customers, the companies cannot survive even if the state gives them money. OK, they do have customers, but their number decreases every month. And getting money from the state will allow the companies to cut prices, allowing more people to buy a new car.

But, most people are not interested in buying cars now. They just want to keep their jobs! If they have some money, they think it is better to save them for the time when they’ll lose the job instead of spending them on a car. If someone gets a loan to buy a car now, his or her IQ must be pretty low! :)

Taiwan Gives Gifts to its Citizens

January 18th, 2009

Every citizen in Taiwan received a coupon worth more than 100 USD that they can use to buy various things. This is part of a plan of boosting the economy.

It looks like a two billion dollars plan to stimulate the economy by allowing people to spend more. Interesting! :) I am curious whether it will work!

Putin shows he’s the greatest

January 7th, 2009

Today, the Russian prime minister asked, in front of cameras, the gas distribution through Ukraine to be halted. The move proves there are political reasons behind the crisis.

Putin has shown that “he’s the greatest” and can make, in a blink of an eye, decisions that affect millions of people. A double message was sent. The first one is addressed to the world and states that Russia is an important player. The second message is addressed to the Russians and shows that Putin is still the most powerful person, despite the fact he is no longer president.

Less gas for Balkans

January 6th, 2009

Today, it was announced that the Balkan countries that import Russian gas did not received the agreed amount of gas. There was no reaction from the European Union, because countries like Bulgaria and Romania do not really matter.

A few hours later, it was reported that Germany starts to have problems and now the European Union considers that the situation is unacceptable. Isn’t that funny? :)

No gas for Ukraine

January 1st, 2009

Russia announced it sopped delivering gas to Ukraine. It looks like the two parties did not reach an agreement for the gas price.

Since Russia asked for a lot more money, there are strong suggestions there exist political reasons behind this crisis.

Anyway, we have a market economy. I guess Ukraine is allowed to buy gas from elsewhere… ;) Unfortunately, there are no other reliable vendors.

Russia has a strong position in this matter and is able to dictate. Probably, soon enough, other countries will start having big problems with Russia!

We have (almost) free money

December 19th, 2008

Japan reduced the key rate to 0.1%. This happened only a few days after the US reduced the key rate to a range 0% - 0.25%. This means it is now almost free to borrow money :) Maybe we’ll soon get a premium if we borrow money ;)

Free money certainly entices everybody to spend more, but what will happen if everybody starts spending money they do not have without loosing anything? What happens to those who want to save money?

No Money for the Auto Industry

December 12th, 2008

The US Senate decided not to “invest” billions of dollars in the US auto industry. Therefore, GM, Ford and Chrysler are now close to bankruptcy. Also, about three million people are about to lose their jobs.

Now, it looks like everybody hopes Obama will do something about this early next year… I very much doubt it. :)

Will the US Auto Industry be Gone?

December 8th, 2008

2008 Nobel price winner Paul Krugman claimed that the US auto industry will probably dissappear due to “geographical and economical dynamics”. In other words, soon enough, nobody will want to buy American cars. They need too much fuel, don’t they?

Under these circumstances, European and Asian car manufacturers might just survive… Or, maybe, less people will buy expensive cars and, over the next years, only cheap cars will be sold. Will we drive cars “made in China” in five years? Or maybe 2000$ cars “made in India”?
